Accent walls can help turn a room into a stylish room that impresses all those who enter it. Are you thinking of doing one but are unsure of how to pull it off? Take a look below at some tips to help you create a stunning accent wall that is so much more than a painted wall.
The basics: Think of your accent wall as a showpiece. For a truly amazing look an accent wall should have texture, layers, and lighting. When creating your wall tie all these elements together. Moldings, art canvases, and shelving are all great additions.
Colour: Depending on which wall in the room you are accenting should depend on the colour you choose. If you want to paint the wall a separate colour than the rest of the room, keep in mind that warmer colours (red, orange, yellow) tend to give the appearance of something being closer than it actually is. You may want to use a more monochromatic theme if you do not want the room to seem smaller than it already is. Consider the amount of natural light in the room as well when deciding on a colour. Selecting a cooler colour (blue, green purple) may be the best choice for a room that sees a lot of natural light.
Keep it Simple: An accent wall should not be overcrowded. The more patterns, colours, decor and textures on the wall, the more overwhelming it will look.
Where: An accent wall should be a focal point of a room. In the bedroom an accent wall would be best behind the bed. In a living room generally the wall behind a sofa or a wall that has a fireplace are the best choices.
Be creative: If you want your accent wall to expose your creativity, let it! Make the wall striped, tiled or wallpapered if a plain background is not enough for your creative style.
Home renovation projects can be stressful. The noise, the mess, and the cost. If you are planning on doing home renovations but are worried about the frustrations that can come along, take a look at the home renovation tips below to help it go as smooth as possible.
Know your budget before the renovations have started. Your budget should also include a bit of extra in case of unexpected obstacles.
Have a plan in place for every detail of your renovation. Where are you going to get material from? How long until it will arrive? If you are renovating a kitchen or bathroom plan ahead how you are going to cook and bathe if your renovation is longer than a day project.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when renovating is accentuating the area’s assets. Do you have a beautiful view that could be hidden by those new windows? Are the new light fixtures as bright as the old ones? Ask yourself if what you are planning is better for the home in general or could it have a negative effect on the value or beauty of the home.
If you are hiring re-modelers for your project do some research first. Look at reviews, ask around and find out how long they have been in business for. Once you have made your selection on re-modelers do not be afraid to voice your concerns but do so in a courteous manner. The project will go smoother if everyone feels appreciated and respected.
Unless you discuss the details about your project, like which way you want your tiling to be placed, you may be disappointed. Make sure to communicate with hired professionals how you would like a project to look before they start on it. Do not make the assumption others will think the same as you.
Whichever area is being worked on, the valuable and breakable items should be removed before the project beings. Accidents happen and the last thing you would want is your inherited family heirloom in pieces from a misstep or brand new couches covered in sawdust.

- 1 large orange
- 6-7 sprigs of fresh balsam
- 1-2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 6-8 whole cloves
- 1-2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
Add the water to a medium saucepan. Cut the orange in half and slice the one half into 6. Place the slices in the water and add the rest of the ingredients. Squeeze the other half of the orange in the saucepan and once it boils on medium-high heat put on simmer. Check every half hour and add water as needed.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Pour a teaspoon of vanilla on a piece of tinfoil around 3 inches wide. Turn off the oven and place the foil inside. Leave the oven door open a small amount.
- Rolling Pin
- Gingerbread Man Cookie Cutter
- 1 cup ground cinnamon
- 2 tbsp ground cloves
- ¼ cup applesauce
- ½ cup white glue
- Cinnamon sticks
Thinly slice the fruits and place them on a cooling rack and then into a 180 degree preheated oven until completely dry. Keep the oven door open slightly so the moisture can escape.
While the apples and oranges are drying in the oven mix cinnamon, cloves, applesauce, and glue together with a metal spoon. Cover the dough and let it sit for one hour.
Roll out the dough, adding more applesauce or cinnamon if necessary. Cut out pieces with a gingerbread man cookie cutter. Place the gingerbread men on a baking sheet sprinkled with cinnamon and add to the oven with the fruit slices. When both are dry remove from the oven and place in a bowl with a handful of cinnamon sticks. Place the bowl in whichever room you desire.
Mix 1/2 cup of glue and 2 cups of applesauce together. Then add 2 cups of cinnamon, mixing until a dough. Roll out the dough on parchment paper, adding a pinch of cinnamon if the dough is too sticky. Cut out shapes on the dough using cookie cutters. Use a straw to punch out a hanging hole at the top of each cutout. Place the cutouts onto a new sheet of parchment paper using a spatula. Allow the ornaments to dry completely. Use fabric paint to paint on designs.

Are you finding you have more than enough items and not enough space to place it all? You don’t have to move to a larger home! There are many tricks to adding space without adding square feet to your home. Read the tips below to find out how you can find extra storage in a small space.
When extra storage space is not an option, find pieces that can work double duty. A nightstand that also works as a dresser, a coffee table with hidden storage or a bed frame with drawers are all great pieces to purchase.
Every area of your home can be utilized for storage space. Floor to ceiling shelving, wall mounted storage, and recessed shelving all add an extra location to place your items.
If a closet door is preventing you from being able to place certain furniture pieces close by consider removing the door and hanging a curtain instead. Doors can be bulky when opened, however curtains aren’t.
In the kitchen, don’t forget about the convenience of hanging items. Many kitchen items come with hanging capability, from pots to utensils so look to the ceiling and add hanging bars. Add slim shelving underneath cabinets for spices. The space above the refrigerator can also be used for storing rarely used items by inserting a shelf or extra cabinet.
If your entryway does not have a closet or the space to add a wall rack place a coat rack in the corner. These pieces take up very little space and look great when they are bare as well. Also, take advantage of the space below the stairs. Shelves or cupboards are a great way to add extra storage space under the staircase. Although chains may not be all that appealing they can be a great space saver for closets.

Mirrors are a must have in the bathroom and a great accessory in other rooms of the home. There are many different sizes and styles of mirrors available. So how do you know which mirror is right for your specific space? Find out below how to select a mirror for any area.
Depending on which space of the home the mirror is going to be placed there are a few things to take into consideration. If the area has natural light arrange the mirror on a wall that can reflect the light best, if possible. If the mirror is going to be in the entrance area of your home, set the mirror closer to the front door so you can get a last glance at yourself before you leave and guests can do a quick check when they visit.
Examine the size of the wall the mirror is to go. A mirror that is too small will look incomplete or misplaced on a wall that is larger. If you are wanting the mirror to be the main decor on the wall make sure it is large enough to stand out. Mirrors in a hallway or entrance should be smaller than ones you would place in a living room or dining room. For bathrooms, the mirror should never be bigger than the vanity.
If the room has tall ceilings a vertical mirror is best to choose to help accentuate the height. If you are hoping to create an illusion of a larger room a horizontal shape can help with that. Round mirrors tend to give a more delicate or unique appeal.
The frame is another factor you should take note of when selecting a mirror. If the mirror is to be the centre of attention in the space, it should have a frame that helps it stand out. If you are wanting it to blend in with the rest of the space a frameless or plain mirror would work best. If the space has a modern look a simple frame pairs well. For rustic looking areas a distressed mirror looks great. If the space has a more traditional or ethnic look to it an ornate or gilded mirror would blend nicely.
The colour of the frame should reflect the decor colour of the rest of the space. If you are wanting a more neutral looking mirror pick a black, white or wood frame. If the room already has wood elements keep the mirror in the same colour family as the rest of the pieces. Metallic frames match modern and formal styled rooms best.

Selecting the right flooring can be a tough decision. There are so many products to choose from. Once you have finally selected your flooring, you may be wondering what to do for the flooring on your staircase. Below are some points to ponder when deciding on which flooring is right for your staircase.
If your flooring upstairs is different from your flooring downstairs it can be tricky when selecting the flooring for your staircase. There are many different solutions for this particular situation. If your downstairs is hardwood and your upstairs is carpeted you can do a full carpeted staircase, or a full hardwood staircase. If you prefer less carpet, have the staircase the same hardwood as the downstairs but add a runner, similar to the carpet upstairs. Or if your staircase has any landings, make the landings hardwood and the stairs carpet.
Staircases that are carpeted need to have the carpet wrap around any open sides. This helps complete the look of the stairs. Carpeted stairs is a safe option that can help prevents slips and falls which is especially important if you have elderly or young children in the home. Select a high-quality carpet cushion so they last longer as stairs tend to be a high traffic area. Carpet also works as a sound barrier and can help to reduce noise.
Hardwood staircases bring together the overall look of a home that already have hardwood floors. Harder woods such as Oak, Hickory, Maple, Birch, and Ash tend to be more durable and will last longer. If your stairs are exposed to sunlight this can cause your hardwood to fade over time so consider an alternative if this is the case or add a runner.
For a staircase that will withstand fading, scratching and scuffing laminate is the way to go. You can get the look of beautiful hardwood with laminate at a cheaper price. Laminate is generally easy to install in floors but tricky when it comes to stairs. Hiring a professional for this project may be beneficial to avoid mistakes and frustrations.
Tile is an uncommon but possible option for staircases. Ceramic and luxury vinyl tile are the two choices for tile stairs. Tile is extremely durable and has a countless amounts of styles, colours and patterns to choose from. Tile is easy to clean, but may require occasional special cleaning and sealing to keep the colour and look of the product. This installation is definitely something that a professional should be hired for, just make sure they do tile stairs as not all floor installers do.
Once your flooring is selected you may decide you would like a runner for added safety or appeal. There are many different options for runner patterns, materials and colours. If you require help with selecting the right length and style click here.
