Curtains, drapes, blinds….how do you know which ones to use on your windows? The key is to know what the purpose of the window treatment is for the specific window you are using. A covering that is for blocking out light is not going to be the same covering as one that is used for decorative purposes. Take a look below at the basic information regarding two main window treatments: curtains & drapes and blinds and shades.

Curtains & Drapes:

Knowing the mood of the room is what can help you decide upon which curtains to choose. If a room is more casual a billowy curtain will blend nicely and a heavy silk works well in a more formal space. Decide whether or not you want the curtains to blend in with the room or make more of a statement. Thatย  will help you figure out which colour to select. If you want them to blend with the rest of the room find curtains that are a few shades darker, but similar tone as the walls. Whichever colour you decide upon if the sun shines through the window it will place that colour’s glow on the room so make sure the colour is something you want for the room. Otherwise simply purchase a liner for the curtains. If you are going to use a bolder colour for your curtains consider if you may plan to change the look of your room in the future. Stay clear of patterned curtains if you have furniture that already has a pattern. Clean curtains monthly with the upholstery tool on a vacuum and yearly on gentle cycle in the wash if the fabric allows. Let the curtains hang to dry and iron where needed while they are still damp. Drapes main purpose is to block out light. These work best in bedrooms and recreational rooms where there is a television. For more information on sizing and placement click here.

Blinds & Shades:

One of the main draws to blinds is their ability to be adjustable. You can let as little or as much light in as you prefer, something that doesn`t quite look right with blinds and drapes half drawn. If you are selecting blinds for a bathroom window make sure they are waterproof. If the blinds are to go over top of a heater make sure they are at least 12 inches above and are not made of vinyl or plastic based materials. Wood blinds are ideal for kitchens where you may be cleaning them more and they are easy to clean if soiled. Shades in textured fabric require less maintenance as they hide dust and dirt better. When deciding upon a colour use the same discretion mentioned with curtains. Vertical blinds and shades should be used on windows that are wider than they are tall, such as a sliding glass door. The wider a horizontal slate, the bigger the window will appear. They are great for smaller spaces. If you have small children keep in mind the length of cord if you go with blinds or shades for your space. If you would like more information on different materials on blinds and shades click here.
