Welcome to another edition of Friday Faves! This week we are looking into our local plant world and sharing with you some of our favourite places to shop and be inspired. Did you know that plants are not just a great addition to the LOOK of your space, they are so good for you! They purify the air, can reduce allergens and well, they look so damn pretty you can’t help but feel good.

Bringing the outside in is something that has been done in design for ever and spans every kind of style! Have a simplistic, scandinavian vibe? Try some hanging plants or geometric planters. Rustic charm more your jam? Find solutions that are made from heavier materials (think galvanized metal, stone or wood!). Check out our list of fave plant/flower businesses in the Lethbridge area.

PS. Alex is an OG Plant Lady and has at least a trillion (read: 30 ish) plants in her house. She accepts gifts in the form of cute planters or discounts to garden centres.

Fave Pop Up Plant Shop: The Sill & Soil

Our good friend Hannah had this idea to open up a pop up plant shop a few months ago and things have been taking off! From supplying gorgeous plants to helping you start up your urban garden, they know whats up. Everywhere we go, we see their killer branding from afar. Hannah has been taking over the market circuit and continues to do so throughout the summer. Check out her instastories to learn more about what plants would be beneficial for different situations and to see her little greenhouse area for the plant babies. Click here for the list of all the upcoming markets and shows you can find your friendly neighbourhood plant lady at!

Fave Plant Workshop: Fox & Fern Co.

If you’ve been looking to learn about terrariums (basically awesome mini gardens inside small containers), this is what you’re looking for! Their insta feed is full of organic inspiration, endless succulents and all the nature feels you could ever want! They are also about to partner with some local businesses to put on a “unity wellness retreat” later this month and we CANNOT wait to see more of these things popping up around good ol #YQL. Check out their website to see when the next terrarium workshop will be, you never know – you might see us at one! We also just found out that they do private ones too – bachelorette idea anyone? Wine and succulents sounds like perhaps the best thing i’ve ever heard!

Fave Local Greenhouse: Greenhaven Garden Centre

Located just outside of the Lethbridge city limits in the sweetest building, Greenhaven Garden Centre has everything you could ever need from a local greenhouse. From boxwoods to trees to seeds and soil, they have it all and its all grown at their 40,000 SF production facility and all geared towards our southern Alberta climate! We love a family owned business and this one has been for 40 years! Their gift shop also has all of the things you could ever want to give to the plant lady in your life! When you go in, bug them about wanting to see them hold events (weddings, fundraisers etc.) in their greenhouse – we hope that the more people want it the more they’ll consider it!

Fave Local Flower Shop: Funky Petals

If you haven’t been to Funky Petals yet, GO. SERIOUSLY, run there right now before the weekend. This amazing local business (owned by the sweetest gal, Chelsa) does so much in the community and you should see their cute downtown store. From day to day floral arrangements to everything necessary for a high end wedding, this local #girlgang knows what up. We recently picked their brains about live art and we hope to see more of that around town soon! Looking for a birthday party idea? They host in store parties which is possibly the funnest way to celebrate anything (with wine again…are you seeing a pattern here?). Go see them and tell them we sent you (and then also bring us peonies please and thank you!).

Fave Big Box Plant Shop: Home Hardware

While we LOVE buying small, sometimes we need the help of a big box store (IE its saturday night and you come up with a random desire to plat things late at night and no one else will take you). Our fav is ALWAYS Home Hardware. Whats not to love, they’re fully Canadian and each location is locally owned and operated so you get that small town customer service with the big box pricing. WIN/WIN. Whats nice with Home Hardware is you can get completely set up in one go, from planters to hoses to miracle grow, you dont have to hit up more than once place! Here’s a hint to all the local southern Alberta plant lovers: the new Coaldale location is DA BOMB. Seriously, its so well stocked and they never run out of stuff.
